Sandra Utzschneider (born August 22, 1973 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) is a German orthopedist . She was head of the pediatric orthopedics department at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Orthopedics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU). She is an adjunct professor and has been working in the private orthopedic group practice OrtoCenter in Munich since 2016.

education

From 1993 to 2000, Sandra Utzschneider studied human medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU), where she wrote a dissertation on shoulder joint prostheses. She then worked as an intern and as an assistant doctor in the department for general surgery and endoprosthetics at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic and in 2004 switched to the LMU as a research assistant. In 2008 she obtained the additional qualification in sports medicine and in 2009 the specialist certification in orthopedics. Since 2009 she has placed her clinical focus on pediatric orthopedics . From 2009 to 2015 she was deputy head of this focus at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Orthopedics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Großhadern Clinic . After 2010 function senior physician was appointed Sandra Utzschneider was for appointment as senior physician in 2015 Head of gravity pediatric orthopedics. Her clinical focuses include conservative and surgical pediatric orthopedics, including neuro-orthopedics.

Scientific activity

From 2005 she set up a working group at LMU on the subject of "Endoprosthetic Abrasion Research" with third-party funding. The main research areas were tribology and abrasion particle analysis in endoprosthetics as well as the biological activity of abrasion particles including aseptic loosening of the prosthesis. Among other things, she led research projects on highly cross-linked polyethylenes , polyetheretherketones (PEEK) and metal bearing couples in endoprosthetics and on the interaction of metal particles and metal ions on the surrounding tissue. In line with her clinical focus, she also dealt with acquired flat feet in adolescence, congenital hip dysplasia as it progresses, and the treatment of congenital hip dislocation .

In 2011 she completed her habilitation at the LMU with a research thesis on the use of polyethylene in knee arthroplasty. She was appointed adjunct professor at LMU in 2015.

She has published in books, in national journals such as Der Orthopäde, and in journals such as Acta Biomaterialia and Journal of Materials Science Materials in Medicine . She is also a reviewer for the journals Acta Biomaterialia and the Journal of Orthopedic Research , both of which are part of Elsevier, and editor of Biotribology and for the key topic "Retrieval Research in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty" by Biomed Research International .

Science awards

In 2011, Sandra Utzschneider received the AFOR (Association for Orthopedic Research) science award, endowed with 12,500 euros, for her habilitation thesis "Use of crosslinked polyethylenes in knee orthodontics and their biological activity in vivo". In the following year, the Themistocles-Gluck Prize for endoprosthetics of the German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery (DGOOC) for the study "Cytokine expression of different carbon-fiber-reinforced PEEK abrasion particles compared to UHMWPE in vivo" followed in the following year.
