The Sangihe couscous ( Strigocuscus sangirensis ) is a marsupial in the climbing bag family that is found on the Indonesian island of Sangihe Besar , the largest of the Sangihe Islands , northeast of Sulawesi .

features

The Sangihe cuscus reaches a head-trunk length of about 39 cm, the tail is just as long and the animals can weigh about one kilogram. This makes the animals one of the smallest climbing baggers. The fur is yellowish-brown on the back and has no back stripes. The face, limbs and tail are yellow. Compared to its closest relative, the gray-brown Sulawesi cuscus ( Strigocuscus celebensis ), the Sangihe cuscus is slightly larger, has a larger skull, larger teeth and is more conspicuously colored.

Habitat and way of life

The Sangihe cuscus occurs in primary and secondary forests . It is nocturnal and, above all, arboreal. Little is known about the reproductive behavior and the rest of the behavior.

status

The population of the Sangihe cuscus is considered endangered ( Vulnerable ). The species is definitely only found on Sangihe Besar, a relatively small island. Whether there are stocks on Siau or other, even smaller islands in the Sangihe Archipelago has not yet been researched. The species is mainly threatened by deforestation. The IUCN does not list them so far and might consider them endangered ( Endangered ) or critically endangered ( Critically Endangered ).
