Sangría [ saŋˈgɾi.a ] ( Spanish " bloodletting ", from sangre "blood") is a legally protected name in Spain and Portugal for a flavored mixed wine drink. The bowl-like drink is made from red wine, pieces of fruit and fruit juice and is often mixed with spirits . Sangría is served cold in glass carafes or, when it is hot, drunk diluted with water . Sangria in Spain is a simple Party Drink, similar to the punch in Germany or the punch in the UK. Since sangría is an easy to prepare punch, there are many variations.

A related summer drink is the Tinto de verano . It consists of red wine with lemonade and is also served chilled.

A “Sangria Blanca”, also known as “Clarea” in Spain, is based on white wine or sparkling wine ( Cava ). A brandy version is called "Zurra".

Sangaree is an ancient English word that refers to the same drink containing wine. It was mainly used in colonial society in the British West Indies .
