history

Sanitas was established as a foundation in 1958. In the 1960s it opened branches in Bern, Basel and Lausanne, which were followed by branches in Geneva and Lugano in the 1970s. Continuous growth continued in the 1980s with the opening of branches in Lucerne and St. Gallen and accelerated in the 1990s with further openings in Aarau, Solothurn, Zurich, Horgen, Winterthur, Thun and Neuchâtel.

With the takeover of Wincare and the individual insurance portfolio from the Winterthur Group in 2006 , Sanitas experienced a further surge in growth. The integration was completed in spring 2008. At the same time, Sanitas introduced a new logo as an umbrella brand for the entire Sanitas Group. The customers of Sanitas, Wincare and Compact have been looked after by six service centers from a single source since 2009. Sanitas is represented in Zurich, Winterthur, Aarau, Lausanne and Lugano and with two service centers specializing in Preference and Compact customers in Bern. The insurance companies of Sanitas and Wincare were merged on January 1, 2017, both in the basic insurance and in the supplementary insurance and continued to operate under the name Sanitas.

After almost a year, CEO Max Schönholzer left the company at the end of January 2018. Otto Bitterli managed the business on an interim basis. According to industry circles, there was no harmony in the Sanitas management under Schönholzer; Sales and market manager Emanuele Diquattro and Lukas Vogt from the business development department have left the company.

On February 1, 2019, Andreas Schönenberger replaced Otto Bitterli as CEO.
