St. Elisabeth Church (Znojmo)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Elisabeth Church was originally built as a church for the Franciscan monastery in Znojmo (Znojmo) in the Czech Republic .

history

Probably the first hospital in Znaim was located in front of the upper gate of the city around 1363 and a St. Elisabeth court hospital is mentioned around 1380. A church in the hospital was first mentioned in 1457 on the occasion of a foundation. The next known documentary mention follows from the same occasion in 1463.

After the Franciscans were relocated from the unprotected lower suburb to the abandoned former Minorite monastery in 1534, the Bohemian and Roman-German King Ferdinand I ordered the city to acquire the now vacant Franciscan monastery in the lower suburb for a charitable purpose. The city of Znojmo complied with this order by setting up a second court hospital here.

During the Reformation, the preacher who worked in St. Michael's Church also took possession of the former monastery church, consecrated to St. Bernard, in order to also preach here. A cemetery was also set up here. Abbot Sebastian I von Klosterbruck protested against this approach , but it was unsuccessful.

Towards the end of the 16th century, the hospital in the upper suburb was closed and its inmates moved to the lower suburb. At an unknown point in time, the patronage of St. Bernard over the church in the former Franciscan monastery was abandoned and that of St. Elisabeth was transferred here from the church of the hospital in the upper suburb. Possibly this happened in connection with a new construction or renovation of the current Elizabeth Church. In 1614 the city of Znojmo renewed the roof of the St. Elisabeth Church.

Johann Georg Weindl founded a foundation that was published in Znaim on November 12, 1743, which financed a secular priest for the St. Elisabeth Church. On May 13, 1752, the relevant foundation letter was approved.

The abolition of the Premonstratensian canons of Klosterbruck in 1784 also resulted in a new division of the parishes in Znojmo in 1786. In that year, the city's new cemetery was also built at the Elisabeth Church. The Elisabeth Church itself was elevated to a parish church and received pews and the organ from the old parish church of St. Barbara in Klosterbruck, as well as several church paraments from the monastery .

In the war years 1762, 1805 and 1809, the Sankt-Elisabeth-Kirche was used as a storage facility.

In 1824 it was decided to abolish the parish of Sankt Elisabeth, which meant that the parish division in this area also had to be reorganized.

The St. Elisabeth Church was renovated around 2009.
