The Santa Catarina Screech Owl ( Megascops sanctaecatarinae ) is a species from the family of real owls. It occurs exclusively in South America.
Appearance
With a body size of about 26 to 27 centimeters, the Santa Catarina Screech Owl is a relatively large species within its genus. It comes in three different color morphs (gray, reddish brown, brown). The brown color morph is the most common. It has dark spots on the top of the body. It has dark vertical stripes on the underside of the body. The eyes are yellow in most individuals, but pale brown in some.
The black-capped screech owl is very similar to the Santa Catarina screech owl. The Santa-Catarina-Screech-Owl is built much stronger and also has stronger claws. The Choliba screech owl is significantly smaller with short feather ears.
distribution and habitat
The Santa Catarina Screech Owl occurs mainly in southeastern Brazil. It has also been observed in Uruguay and northeast Argentina. Presumably the species is a resident bird. It inhabits semi-open forests, open grasslands with isolated forests, and raised bogs on the edge of forests and adjacent agricultural land. It has even opened up human settlement space. Their height distribution ranges from 300 to 1,000 meters.
Way of life
The Santa Catarina Screech Owl is a nocturnal species of owl. It usually transmits in the thick foliage of trees. Their food spectrum consists mainly of insects, spiders and smaller vertebrates. She usually hunts from a raised hide. The breeding season begins in late August or early September when the male begins to sing more often. Tree holes are used as a nesting opportunity. The clutch size is not known. Presumably, however, the Santa Catarina Screech Owl is similar in its breeding habits to those of other screech owls.
