Santa Cruz is a district of Costa Rica and the capital of the canton of the same name in the province of Guanacaste in the northwest of the country.

Santa Cruz is only a few kilometers from the Pacific Ocean and has a population of 21,544 (as of 2011).

history

The city was founded in 1782 and was initially called Las Delicias. The wife of the city's founder, Bernabela Ramos Sequeira, had placed a large wooden cross on the outside of her house. A rosary was prayed in honor of this cross every year and soon afterwards this custom became a great attraction for the people in the region, so it was decided to rename the city Las Delicias a Santa Cruz .

The city of Santa Cruz is known as the "Ciudad folclórica" of Costa Rica. Every year in the first ten days of January, a traditional popular festival is celebrated, which attracts thousands of tourists from all over the country. In the first days of the celebration, folk dances, theater and cabaret with concerts of the traditional marimba (musical instrument similar to the xylophone, typical of folk culture in the province of Guanacaste) will be performed in the park “Bernabela Ramos Sequeira” . In the last days of the festival, a bullring will be built on the “Plaza de los Mangos”, the main square of the city, and a rodeo will be held.

climate

The climate is determined by the rainy season and the dry season . The rainy season begins between the end of April and the beginning of May and alternates with the dry season at the end of October. The temperatures fluctuate between 27 ° C and 38 ° C depending on the time of day and the season.

economy

The economy is mainly based on agriculture, tourism and services. The land is divided into farms, often of considerable size, on which livestock and sugar cane cultivation are practiced.

Tourism is particularly developed in the coastal region, especially in the district of Tamarindo near the regional airport, where in recent years there has been a rapid development of the infrastructure and hotel accommodation, despite the lack of an adequate road network. The former fishing village is now a well-known holiday resort.
