Santa Maria dei Miracoli is a church in the Cannaregio , Campo Santa Maria Nova district of Venice and is known for its characteristic marble cladding.
history
In 1408, Francesco Amadi commissioned Nicolo di Pietro to paint the Madonna and Child. In the course of time a deep belief in this image developed, which was thought to be miraculous. Soon a complex of houses was demolished and between 1481 and 1489 Pietro Lombardo and his sons built the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli.

Church building
Pietro Lombardo and his sons only had a very small and almost rectangular area to build the church. The church therefore consists of only one nave with a barrel vault . This is followed by an almost square apse with a dome. Outside and inside the church was decorated with marble in many different colors, which makes the church a pearl of the Cannaregio. The walls were hollow to protect against moisture. During a renovation in the 19th century, however, the cavities were filled and the church was damaged by penetrating moisture. It was therefore extensively renovated at the end of the 1990s.
The church is part of the chorus , an association of over 15 churches in Venice.
