Meerufenfushi ( Dhivehi މޭރުފެންފުށި), called Meeru for short , is an approximately 1.2 km long and 350 m wide island of the North Malé Atoll ( Kaafu administrative atoll ) and a hotel complex in the Maldives . The 4½- star resort is called Meeru Island Resort & Spa and belongs to Crown & Champa Resorts , which own a total of seven resorts in the Maldives.

location

Meerufenfushi, which means something like freshwater island, is one of the oldest hotel islands in the Maldives and is now one of the four largest resorts. The island of Meeru is one of the so-called tourist islands and can be visited and entered by anyone. It is about 1200 m long and 350 m wide and 60 hectares in size. To the south in the immediate vicinity is Dhiffushi , a so-called local island inhabited by Maldivians , which tourists may only visit as part of organized tours. Meeru is about 40 km north of the airport and the capital Malé . The transfer from Malé to Meeru by speedboat takes around 50 minutes and 15 minutes by seaplane . The time difference between Germany (CEST - summer time) and Meeru is 3 hours or 4 hours in winter time (CET - normal time), as there is no time change there.

history

The hotel complex on Meeru was opened in 1977, at the beginning there were simple standard rooms in long houses with four to five rooms each. In 1996 an extensive renovation was carried out. In 1998, 138 beach villas , 27 water villas and the two honeymoon suites , which were located on piers above the water, were built. In addition, the first swimming pool was built in the same year . After Meeru was also affected by the 2004 tsunami , repair work also had to be carried out, in the course of which 61 beach villas were converted into jacuzzi beach villas .

In 2004 the north of the island was built, the first 33 jacuzzi water villas were built , which stand on jetties over the water, to which the Maalan restaurant including Uthuru bar and the north reception were built. In 2006, 44 more Jacuzzi water villas were built on the east side of Meeru. In 2007 the Asian Wok restaurant opened on the south side of the island , and the Kakuni bar was renovated. The pavilion pool including the Hot Rock Restaurant on the east side of the island were completed in 2008. From 2009 the renovation of the individual rooms took place, in 2012 the Dhoni bar and in 2016 the Farivalhu restaurant were renewed. The two honeymoon suites were dismantled in 2015/16.

investment

The systems consist of various types of bungalows GardenRoom , Beach Villa , Jacuzzi Beach Villa , Water Villa and Jacuzzi Water Villa . The latter stand on footbridges over the water and were built from 2004. There are also several restaurants, bars and cafes on the island. An artificial turf and a five-a-side football field are available, as are several tennis courts and badminton fields . There is also a small golf course on Meeru . There is a swimming pool on the west and east sides . A spa is located in the north and south of the island. In the center of the island there is a large diesel generator that ensures the island's energy supply . The electricity generated is used, among other things, for seawater desalination for freshwater production. In earlier times drinking and service water was obtained from the ground via a pump. The accommodation for the employees is in the interior of the island.

There are no asphalt roads on the island - all places can be easily reached on foot (it takes about three quarters of an hour to walk around). The paths that connect the north and south of the island, as well as the west and east, consist of more or less entrenched coral sand . There are very few vehicles on the island, mostly club cars .

Various excursions are possible from Meeru: The house reef is approached by boat about 1 km from Meeru twice a day, and day trips to Malé and Kagi, among others, or numerous boat and diving excursions throughout the atoll are offered.

Flora and fauna

The vegetation consists of thick coconut trees , banana and breadfruit trees and some other deciduous trees.

The animals living on the island include the gray heron , flying foxes , the white-breasted keel rail , the bloodsucker agame , the Asian house gecko , a few snakes and non-poisonous spiders . Many hermit crabs and ghost crabs can be seen on the beach, especially at night . A rich fauna lives in the sea around the island.

Blacktip reef sharks , various rays such as stingrays and a variety of other fish can be seen in the water and even from the beach . During boat trips, dolphins can often be seen jumping out of the water next to the boat.
