Santa Prisca is a church in the Mexican city ​​of Taxco in northern Guerrero state . She is known for its baroque s colonial architecture known and one of the most beautiful churches in Mexico.

Building history and consecration

In 1751, José de la Borda, who owned several silver mines in the area of ​​Taxco and had made a fortune with them, commissioned the building of the church, which he financed in full. The work, begun in the same year by the country's best architects, painters and sculptors, spanned a period of seven years. In 1758, the church was consecrated on March 15, 1759 by the Archbishop of Manila, Manuel Antonio Rojo del Río Lubián y Vieyra, and placed under the protection of Saints Santa Prisca and San Sebastián , whose figures flank the sides of the main altar. This explains the official name of the parish of Santa Prisca and San Sebastián ( Parroquia de Santa Prisca y San Sebastián ).

The church is located directly on the Zócalo (Plaza Borda), the main square in the city center. It is made of pink sandstone and is an important example of the ornate Baroque style of Churriguerism , both outside and inside .

The upper halves of the 48-meter-high twin towers as well as the west-facing entrance portal are adorned with artistic sculptures, sculptures, columns and ornaments. Immediately above the main entrance there is a relief of the baptism of Jesus , which symbolically leads to ascent into eternal life and, in this specific case, means ascent into the interior of the church.

The interior is decorated with a number of magnificent gilded churriguera-style altars and houses a gallery of important figures in Taxco's history as well as two paintings by the most important Mexican painter of the 18th century, Miguel Cabrera .
