Santamaria (band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Santamaria (Holy Mary) is a Portuguese eurodance and pop group. They are one of the most important pop bands in the country. They are also the pioneers of Eurodance in Portugal.

history

Santamaria, after the practice of naming things or bands after saints, which is not uncommon in Portugal , was founded in Porto in 1998 by Luis Marante, Filipa Lemos and their brother To Lemos. It was the first Eurodance band in the musical history of Portugal.

The band regularly landed in the top 5 of the Portuguese pop charts, the first albums sold over 100,000 times each, the album Sem Limite even 150,000 times. The band received 21 silver and two gold records . In total, the band has sold around a million records in Portugal and Brazil to date, a success that has not yet been achieved and that is unique for Portugal. They have given a good 800 concerts since they were founded.

The band is regularly featured on Portuguese television and is also known to many citizens who do not listen to pop music.

Internationally, the band is best known in Brazil and the former colonies of Portugal. Tours took them to countries with a strong Portuguese minority , where they then performed in front of their compatriots. They played in Canada , USA , Brazil, South Africa , France , Switzerland , Great Britain , Germany and Luxembourg . The song Happy Maravilha was created in 1998 with the Danish Eurodance singer Whigfield .

The band's best known hits were or are Falesia de Amor , Happy Maravilha , Let's Go to Party and Let's Go to Africa . The band sings in Portuguese, but often sprinkles in English words so that the songs are not purely in Portuguese.
