Santiago (ship)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Santiago was a Spanish caravel . She was part of the fleet with which Ferdinand Magellan tried to sail around the world. After a year of construction, it was completed on April 2nd, 1508 in a Spanish shipyard and had a water displacement of approx. 60 tons. The crew was 32 men. The Santiago was the only caravel in the fleet and was better suited for exploring coastlines and rivers than the larger and sedate carracks . The Santiago sailed under the command of Juan Rodriguez Serrano who was to explore the southeast coast of Argentina in the spring of 1520 on the orders of Magellan . On this exploratory voyage, the Santiago sank and Serrano had to make his way back to camp overland.
