Santiago Rebull Gordillo

Santiago Rebull Gordillo (* 1829 in Mexico City ; † 1902 there ) was a Mexican painter.

biography

Rebull, son of the Catalonian José Rebull and his Mexican wife Josefa Gordillo, began his studies at the Academia Nacional de San Carlos de México at the age of 18, where he studied with Pelegrín Clavé . For his portrait of Abel's death “La Muerte de Abel” he received a scholarship for further studies in Europe, where he studied for seven years at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome . After returning to his home country, he taught there from 1860 at the Academia Nacional de San Carlos de México and became rector there a year later. He was court painter to Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and painted the most famous portrait of the emperor.
