Santorini is an abstract board game for 2 - 4 people. It was first published in 2004 by Gordon Hamilton . In 2017 it appeared in a new version by Roxley Games , which was financed through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter .
The game design is based on the architecture of the cliffs of Santorini island in Greece . The game, which was primarily developed for 2 players, is played on a 5 × 5 grid. The aim is to build a “city” by creating buildings with a maximum of three floors from the given components. The winner is the player who can place one of his two pieces on a three-story building.
The game can alternatively be played with three or four people in two teams.
Toy building blocks
1 game board, 1 cliff building block, 6 workers (in 3 colors), 22 ground floor building blocks, 18 mezzanine floor building blocks, 14 top floor building blocks, 18 domes, 30 god cards, 1 set of instructions
Style of play
The player moves one of his two figures in the grid and places a building block on an adjacent space. By laying further blocks, multi-storey buildings are created, which consist of a ground floor, mezzanine and upper floor as well as a dome. One block can be placed per move.
The move can only be made to the next higher level or down without restriction
The dome on a three-story building prevents a player from entering this space. This is used tactically if the opponent can win the game with his next move. To do this, the executing player must place his figure next to the three-story building and place the dome.
The winner is the player who first moved one of his two pawns to the third level or if the opponent cannot make any more moves.
In the version released in 2017, the “god card” equips every player with (asymmetrical) special abilities. The optionally available "Golden Fleece" expansion provides the game with additional unique effects and a yellow figure, which enables the adjacent figures to special offers.
Publication and criticism
In 2004, Hamilton released the game in direct sales. Run by Roxley Games between March and April 2016, the Kickstarter campaign was supported by over 7,100 backers and raised C $ 700,000. This made Santorini the most successful Kickstarter campaign in the Canadian province of Alberta . Hamilton sees the comic design as the reason for the success of the Kickstarter campaign.
In addition to the game instructions in English, German instructions are now also available.
