The Sautränke Grünstadt is a forest with a fountain near Grünstadt , Bad Dürkheim district , Rhineland-Palatinate , which has been classified as a natural monument .

Existence and history

It is a small wood of old deciduous trees that is located west of the city of Grünstadt on the Grünstadter Berg , southeast of the hamlet of "Sieghof", which was only created in 1828 . A wet meadow , which has been reforested in recent years , adjoins the wood, sloping to the east .

The area is the old commons , i.e. the free and generally usable corridor of Grünstadt. There was a high pasture and, until the end of the 18th century, there was also a wooded area that was later cleared. Here the Grünstadt livestock grazed, in particular the pigs were driven into the local forest to eat. The drinking trough was at the eastern end of this commons, facing the city.

Like the commons, the drinking troughs should at least come from Franconian times. In Grünstadt she has been known since time immemorial and the area named after her “Unter der Schweinstränke” is one of the ancient names of the fields. However, the traditional name "Sautränke" is used in Grünstadt and not the High German name "Schweinstränke" .

The eponymous fountain is located on the plateau of the wood that slopes to the east. It is set in the form of a concrete shaft well from the beginning of the 20th century. The shaft is currently closed with an iron plate and the water is no longer accessible. Up until about 30 years ago the well shaft was still open and filled with water. In the past it was fitted with a handle pump on a pipe so that the water could be pumped up. The substructure of it is still there. In front of the well shaft there is a concreted area with a central channel, which absorbed the pumped water and let it flow off to the east, where the terrain slopes down. The former wet meadow is also located there.

The spring was mainly used to water pigs and other cattle and originally flowed more strongly. Presumably, the well shaft with a handle pump was already created because of the reduced inflow.

To the southwest of the fountain is a sandstone bench from the early 19th century.
