Sarajevo International Culture Exchange
Sarajevo International Culture Exchange ( SICE ) was an art project that took place annually between 2003 and 2007 in Sarajevo ( Bosnia and Herzegovina ) under the patronage of the German and Japanese embassies in Sarajevo. SICE is considered to be the largest artistic exchange project in Sarajevo after the Balkan War .
General
SICE emerged from a failed cooperation between the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Sarajevo . The Japanese artist Sohei Iwata started the project in 2003. In collaboration with Willem Besselink (artist), Elodie Evers (curator), Sanna Miericke (photographer) and Masaru Iwai (artist), Tino Mager and Damir Kulo , around two dozen artists from Asia and Europe were invited to work together on site for a month to deal artistically with the city of Sarajevo. The choice of location was mainly based on the special situation in Sarajevo since the Balkan War . From the artistic preoccupation with the reality of life in Bosnia-Herzegovina after the end of the war and in close contact with the residents of Sarajevo, the participants initiate workshops, film screenings, discussion events and exhibitions independently of the few existing art and cultural institutions.
