Sarakata is one of the longest rivers in Vanuatu . It runs in the southeast of the Espiritu Santo Island and flows into Velit Bay , west of Luganville .

geography

The river rises in the highlands west of Napil and flows strongly meandering initially to the west and receives numerous small tributaries. At Napil ( ) a larger source stream flows to it from the left and north ( ), whereupon the river changes direction and runs south. The river also forms the Cascade de la Sarakata ( )

history

Unity Park on the Segond Channel (Second Canal) near the estuary was the location of John F. Kennedy's Motor Torpedo Boat PT-109 while the crew awaited transfer to the Solomon Islands during World War II .

A Japanese company has plans to build a hydropower plant.
