Sarcoptidae is a family of mites with 17 genera and 117 species. All live parasitically and stay permanently on their host. The best- known representative is the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei .

Sarcoptidae are astigmatic mites with a round, slightly flattened body on the belly. The first leg link ( coxa ) has sunk into the body so that the legs only protrude slightly, the last pair of legs usually not at all. The sole lobe ( empodium ) is claw-shaped and the adhesive lobes ( pulvilla ) arise from a stem-like pretarsus .
