Sardanapal
Sardanapal (os) was the last king of the Assyrian Empire after Ktesias of Knidos .
Historical classification
He is equated with the historical figures Ashurbanipal or Šamaš-šuma-ukin , the king of Babylon , who committed suicide in the burning ruins of his palace.
Sardanapal supposedly founded Anchiale , a city in Cilicia . Alexander the Great allegedly saw a statue of the king here, along with an inscription that said, “Anchiale and Tarsus founded Sardanapal in one day; But you, stranger, eat, drink, love; what else a person has is not worth mentioning. "
Aftermath
- Aristotle mentions Sardanapal when he writes about the most important forms of life in the context of the majority way of life :
“The crowd turns out to be quite slavish, giving preference to the way of life of the dear cattle; However, it has a certain justification for this insofar as many powerful people also share the preferences of Sardanapal. "
- The opera Sardanapalus , which premiered in 1698, was written by the German composer Christian Ludwig Boxberg .
