Saria ( Greek Σαρία [ saˈria ] ( f. Sg. )) Is today an extremely sparsely populated Greek island in the south-eastern Aegean , which belongs to the Dodecanese archipelago . It is only separated from the larger, southern neighbor island of Karpathos by the Díavlos Sarías (Δίαυλος Σαρίας ) strait, which is 100 m wide and 1.5 m deep . In ancient times , the two islands were still connected by a land bridge, only later land subsidence as a result of earthquakes led to the current separation of the islands.

Saria is almost 8 kilometers long, up to 4.5 kilometers wide and has an area of 20.429 km². The mountainous and barren island reaches a height of 631 meters.

The sparse remains of the ancient city of Nisiros, some of which are located below the waterline, testify to the earlier settlement of the island, from which the village of Palatia, founded around 900 AD, with the ruins of a monastery, probably emerged.

In 1420, due to constant pirate attacks, almost all the inhabitants left the island and founded the village of Olymbos on Karpathos, which together with the island has been part of the municipality of Karpathos since 2011 . Inhabitants from Olymbos as well as the shepherds and farmers who hardly live here all year round operate pasture farming on the island and to a lesser extent agriculture on small areas.

Saria has some very small, but almost untouched beaches. There is no tourist infrastructure, but the island can be visited on day trips from Karpathos. In addition to bathing tours, hikes across the island are also offered.
