Life

He is a former scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation and was co-editor of an economic case study in 2002. He received his doctorate on the work of Thomas Mann at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich .

His first novel, Hübsche attempts (2000), ironically portrayed Zurich's social life. In 2001 Tingler read in the competition for the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize ; his text was discussed controversially within the jury. In his second book Ich bin ein Profi (2003), Tingler wrote about the mechanisms of the literary business . In Tingler's fictional and essayistic works, the dynamics and facades of society are repeatedly dissected from an ironic point of view. This is a main motif of both the novel Fischtal (2007), which depicts the disintegration of an upper-class West Berlin family, as well as Doctor Phil (2010), where the classic devil's pact motif is also included. Tingler also published the illustrated manners manuals Style Show (2008) and Lighter Travel (2010). In 2013 the essay volume How free are we still? , in which the ideals of classical Anglo-Saxon liberalism are developed.

In addition to contributions in anthologies , Tingler publishes articles, essays and columns in newspapers and magazines (including Vogue , Stern , Neon and NZZ am Sonntag ). He also wrote articles for radio and television ( WDR , Swiss radio and television ). He is currently a columnist for the Zürcher Tages-Anzeiger and for Business Punk . Since September 2014, Tingler has been discussing classics and new releases as a literary critic in the Swiss television program Literaturclub .

In 2020 Tingler was a member of the jury for the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize . There he came under fire when, at the beginning of the discussion about the text by Lydia Haider, he suddenly asked the writer to give the jury information about “what concerns” her contribution was pursuing. Haider replied that it was up to the jury to judge that. Jury chairman Hubert Winkels also resolutely opposed Tingler's question.
