Sarteneja |
Sarteneja is a village in the Corozal District in Belize . It is located on the arts of the Sarteneja Peninsula, approximately 65 km from Orange Walk Town and close to the Shipstern Conservation & Management Area . The village is still heavily influenced by fishing . 90% of the approx. 1500 residents live directly or indirectly from the sea. Tourism is becoming increasingly important.
Sarteneja is best known for its shipbuilding, the sailing regatta during Easter and the festivities around the Finados ( Día de los Muertos ).
history
The Maya populated the region for hundreds of years, so over 350 former sites have been found on the peninsula, most of them around the abandoned lumberjack settlement of Shipstern. The Maya name for the village means "water between the stone" .
