The Sartiglia (Sardinian Sa Sartiglia ) is an equestrian game (giostra equestre) that takes place in Oristano (Sardinia) on the last Sunday and Tuesday of the Carnival.

history

It comes from the late medieval tradition of knight tournaments, which have been handed down in Italy in quintana riding. The Sartiglia has been documented since 1546 and is now one of the most spectacular and choreographically richest carnival customs in Sardinia and Italy. This equestrian game is said to have been held for the first time in honor of Emperor Charles V.

procedure

On Mardi Gras Sunday and the following Tuesday, the riders must try in the streets of the historical center of Oristano to spear a suspended silver star with a lance at full gallop . If the campaigns are successful and the stars have been cut, the people believe that there will be a good harvest next year. The riders are dressed in historical costumes beforehand. They are wearing a bridal veil, a top hat and a bouquet of violets in their hands. After the star piercing, the participants compete in riding stunts. On Carnival Monday is a horse show for young people who Sartigliedda instead.
