The Satellite Sentinel Project (SSP) was conceived by George Clooney together with John Prendergast, co-founder of the Enough Project , during a visit to South Sudan in October 2010. It combines the analysis of satellite photos and field reports with Google's Map Maker technology. Conventional video recordings are also used. This is to prevent a renewed flare-up of the civil war in South Sudan .

The SSP was able to first confirm the complete destruction of the villages Maker Abior, Todach and Tajale in the contested Abyei area . The project has submitted evidence of war crimes in Abjei by the regime in Khartoum to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the UN Security Council for examination.

The project is the result of a collaboration between Not On Our Watch , the Enough Project , Google, the United Nations Education and Research Institute (UNITAR), the UNOSAT program, DigitalGlobe , the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and Trellon.

Not On Our Watch provided the start-up capital and is contributing to the project with status reports and analyzes of the political situation. UNITAR and UNOSAT analyze the satellite images. They are working with Google and Trellon to create the web platform. DigitalGlobe provides the satellite images as well as additional analyzes.

It is the first public project that is to systematically discover potential trouble spots and security risks along a border within just 24-36 hours and publish the data. The aim is to prevent humanitarian disasters.
