Satonda covers an area of 4.8 km² and reaches an altitude of 289 m. ü. d. M. The island is of volcanic origin. In its center there is a water-filled crater with an extension of 150 m × 200 m and a depth of up to 70 m. When the eruption of the Tambora volcano on the neighboring island of Sumbawa triggered a tsunami in 1815 , seawater penetrated the crater, which had previously been a crater lake of fresh water. Satonda is forested, but has a sandy beach with a pier for smaller boats, from which a paved hiking trail leads to the crater. The construction of a hotel complex is planned. Satonda is surrounded by an extensive coral reef.
