Satsuki Odamura

Satsuki Odamura ( Japanese 小 田村 さ つ き , Odamura Satsuki ) is a Japanese koto player living in Australia .

Satsuki played koto from the age of ten and studied from the age of eighteen at the Sawai International Koto School in Tokyo with Sawai Tadao and Kazue . In 1985, she obtained her master's degree here and began teaching Koto at the Sawai International Koto School in Sydney and Monash University in Melbourne.

In addition, Satsuki began an international concert activity as a koto soloist and member of various music ensembles. These include the ensembles GEST8 and elision for contemporary music, the fusion group Sangam , the ensemble of the Butoh dancer Yumi Umiumare and the groups Waratah (with Tony Lewis and Sandy Evans ) and PRRIM (with Tunji Beier and Adrian Sherriff ).

Numerous Australian composers have written works for her and her instrument, including Carl Vine ( Concerto Gaijin ), Ross Edwards ( In Koto dreaming ), Peter Sculthorpe ( Little Requiem ), Liza Lim , Barry Conyngham ( Afterimages for koto and small orchestra ), Michael Askill , Anthony Briggs , Tony Lewis , Linsey Pollak and Sarah de Jong .

She won two Sounds Australia Awards in 1998 and the Australian Music Award for best world music instrumentalist of the year in 2000.
