Barry Conyngham

Barry Conyngham (born August 27, 1944 in Sydney ) is an Australian composer and music teacher.

Until 1971 Conyngham studied music at the University of Sydney with Peter Sculthorpe and in Japan with Toru Takemitsu . He then completed postgraduate studies at the University of California, San Diego San Diego, and earned his doctorate in 1982 from the University of Melbourne . From 1973 to 1974 he was a Fellow at Princeton University , then Composer in Residence at the University of Aix-Marseille . From 1975 he taught at the University of Melbourne. In 1989 he became a professor at the University of Wollongong . From 1994 to 2000 he was Vice Chancellor of Southern Cross University , after which he held the Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University for a year . Since then he has lived as a freelance composer.

The more than 70 works by Conyngham include piano and organ pieces, chamber music, instrumental concerts and orchestral works as well as operas. He was twice the recipient of the Albert H Maggs Composition Award (1978 and 2008) and was honored as a member of the Order of Australia in 1997 for his services as a composer and music teacher .
