The Sauerbraten Game Engine is a free game engine that forms the basis for the games Cube 2: Sauerbraten , Eisenstern and the commercial development technology C: About .

Like its predecessor, the Cube Engine , the Sauerbraten Game Engine is platform-independent (currently GNU / Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows) and offers the option of modifying maps interactively. A special feature of the engine is that the maps are based on height fields and use hierarchical octree structures. As a result, the representation of the game world can be highly compressed and requires comparatively little memory . In the notes for developers, Oortmerssen points out that the idea behind Cube and Sauerbraten has always been to keep memory requirements as low as possible. Co-developers should therefore always see the implementation of new functions primarily as a challenge in terms of minimizing memory requirements. Version 1.5 of OpenGL with Shader extension is used as the graphics interface . The engine itself is released as free software under the zlib license . The licenses of the other components differ.

Spin-off

With Tesseract , one of the main developers of Cube 2: Sauerbraten , Lee Salzmann, released a new first person shooter in 2014. The Sauerbraten Game Engine served as the basis, but was expanded to include numerous functions for modern, dynamic light display. The Sauerbraten Game Engine only offers static lighting effects for this, which is particularly annoying when creating cards , since the lighting conditions have to be recalculated every time a change is made, with a long delay. A first version of the game was released in May 2014. In addition to the extensively expanded graphics engine, a focus of the game is on in-game editing, which enables cards to be created while the game is running.
