Cube is a freeware - first-person shooter developed by Wouter "Aardappel" van Oortmerssen. The game was originally only intended for creating landscapes. While the game engine is under the zlib license , the game also has proprietary content. With Cube 2: Sauerbraten a successor appeared in 2004.

General

There are two game modes to choose from in single player mode and twelve in multiplayer mode. The game mechanics are based on those of Quake and Doom . A special feature is the "multiplayer mapping", whereby several players can create their own maps using the integrated editor . Cube was originally released in 2001, the last version so far is from August 29, 2005. In 2008, however, a rudimentary port for the Apple iPhone was released . Van Oortmerssen later developed sauerbraten . This game offers more extensive possibilities for creating new maps and improved graphics.

The game won the 2002 Happypenguin Award for best (essentially) free 3D action game.

AssaultCube (formerly “ActionCube”) is a total conversion . It puts the player in a more realistic setting and offers some technical advancements such as bots and a more detailed administration of servers . There are several game modes available, with an emphasis on multiplayer games.

Death Illustrated has, among other things, the special feature that all graphics are in black and white . There is only one version available for Microsoft Windows .
