AssaultCube (formerly ActionCube) is a free first person shooter based on the Cube game engine . The game offers a multiplayer mode and has bots . AssaultCube runs on Microsoft Windows , Linux and Mac OS X .

history

The AssaultCube project started in July 2004. The first official release was in November 2006 under the name "ActionCube". The developers' plan was to translate Cube's simplicity into a more realistic environment.

At the request of the developers of Action Quake 2 , the game was renamed AssaultCube on May 6, 2007.

Despite its simple graphics and its simple gameplay, AssaultCube has a loyal fan base that also provides several dozen servers. Most of the players have organized themselves into clans . In addition, a cup was organized by the ESL e-sports league . ESL also provides its own AssaultCube league and ladder (ranking list).

The constant popularity is guaranteed by the creative but simple game modes, the availability for all common operating systems and the low hardware requirements.

Game mechanics

AssaultCube should be more realistic and team-oriented than Cube , but at the same time adopt Cube's fast game principle. Compared to other games, AssaultCube is considered slower than Quake and faster than Counter-Strike . There are two teams, the Cubers Liberations Army (CLA) and the Rabid Viper Special Forces (RVSF).

In AssaultCube the so-called penalty running is possible, i. H. by moving forward and sideways at the same time, the player can run faster. This unrealistic form of movement was adopted from the original cube game. Another unrealistic movement possibility is a trick jump comparable to the rocket jump , in which the recoil of a weapon is used to jump higher and run faster.

The weapons are all fictional and typical of the first person shooter genre . As a primary weapon you can choose between an assault rifle (MTD-57 Assault Rifle), a sniper rifle (Precision Tech AD-81), a submachine gun (A-ARD / 10) or a shotgun (V-19 Combat Shotgun). However, the main weapon can only as part of a re-entry of the player to be replaced. In addition, a knife, a pistol (also known as an Akimbo ) and, if necessary, grenades are available. Unlike most first-person shooters, it is not possible to steal weapons, equipment or ammunition from killed game characters.

In addition, by including pickups scattered around the game landscape, the player can upgrade or restore his health at short notice.

Multiplayer

AssaultCube has thirteen different multiplayer modes that can be played with or against other players over a network ( LAN ) and on the Internet . Some game modes have restrictions on weapon selection, re-entry, or available pickups.

  • (Team) Deathmatch
  • (Team) One Shot One Kill (sniper rifle and knife only)
  • (Team) Survivor
  • Last Swiss Standing (only knives and grenades, named after the Swiss Army Knife , as one of the developers is Swiss)
  • Pistol Frenzy (pistol, knife and grenades only)
  • Capture the flag
  • Hunt The Flag
  • (Team) Keep The Flag
  • Coop Edit

Mapping

AssaultCube has - like the original Cube - an integrated map editor . There is also the multiplayer mapping ("Coop Edit") known from Cube . In this way, your own game landscapes ( maps ) can be created very easily and quickly , uploaded to public servers, edited together or simply played.
