Saulteaux

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Saulteaux (also Salteaux , also Sauteux ) are one of the First Nations in the Canadian provinces of Ontario , Manitoba , Saskatchewan , Alberta and (in some very small groups) British Columbia . They are also known as Bungi or Plains Ojibwa .

The Saulteaux belong to the Indian people of the Anishinabe (also Anihšināpē ) and to the dialect group of the same name of the Algonquin languages . Saulteaux is French and means “people of the rapids”, which refers to their origins in Sault Ste. Marie takes.

Since the 1770s they settled on the northern prairies as mounted bison hunters . With the extinction of the bison at the end of the 19th century, they lost their subsistence basis.
