The Saurer 5 DUK is a bus from the Swiss manufacturer Adolph Saurer AG , Arbon .

History and technical data

The 5 DUK is a left-hand drive bus and postbus type of the former PTT companies and various regional bus / transport companies in Switzerland. The Saurer 5 DUK was built from 1953 and has a driver's seat, 39 passenger seats, 33 standing places and a luggage compartment. The luggage compartment is directly behind the rear exit door and has a partition wall with sliding door with glass panes. There are also seats in the luggage compartment. The passenger area is divided in the middle by a partition with a door, because the rear part of the bus was previously designed as a smoking compartment. When the smoking compartment was abolished, only the door was removed, the rest of the partition wall remained.

DUK is D iesel- U nterflur- K ompressor. At the post office, these Saurer 5 DUK were used as postbuses or as postbuses with a single-axle luggage tag. At Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe , these buses were mainly used on the mountain routes Zug - Ägeri (line 1) and Zug - Menzingen (line 2). Postbuses Saurer 5 DUK in the mountain area and the buses of the ZVB were also equipped with split spreaders in front of the rear wheels in order to achieve better grip when driving uphill in snow. This applies to buses without a trailer, to buses with the APE 4.80 passenger trailer or with the APE 4.80 passenger trailer and the AGP 3 luggage trailer .

Without a trailer, a maximum speed of up to 120 km / h would have been possible. Around 1975/76, the Saurer 5 DUK were replaced by more modern vehicles such as the FBW 91U EU4A bus with bodies from Hess. Some Saurer 5 DUK were sold to mostly Eastern European countries after they were taken out of service. A Saurer 5 DUK ZVB is in the Zuger depot technology history .
