Savi di Terraferma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Savii or Savi di Terraferma ("wise men of the mainland") were high-ranking officials of the Republic of Venice who were tasked with monitoring the republic's properties on the Italian mainland ( Domini di Terraferma ).

The Savi di Terraferma were founded around 1420 as part of the expansion of the republic into Veneto and Lombardy and the military confrontation with the Duchy of Milan to secure supremacy in northern Italy. It consisted of five people and sat in the Pien Collegio , the cabinet of the republic. As with other higher magistrates in Venice, eligibility for this office was restricted: the members were elected from the Venetian Senate , lasted six months and could not be re-elected for three months thereafter. In order to ensure continuity, the appointments to the office of Savio di Terraferma were staggered: three took office on October 1st, two on January 1st, three on April 1st and two on July 1st. As with all Savi , the office was not endowed with a salary, but could be exercised in conjunction with other public offices.
