Savoie (ship, 1914)
The Savoie is a paddle wheel steamer on Lake Geneva built in 1914 by the Sulzer brothers in Winterthur . The name Savoie stands for the French departments of Savoien and Haute-Savoie, which border Lake Geneva to the south . It is characterized by the very fine inlay in the 1st class saloon. With a length of 68 meters and a width of 14.3 meters, it currently has a capacity of 690 people. The ship was fully refurbished for the first time in 1966 and 1967, when the boiler was switched from coal to oil. The Savoie is considered to be the first such comprehensively reconditioned ship on Lake Geneva. Around forty years later, the ship was completely overhauled again between 2004 and 2006.
The paddle steamer is one of eight paddle steamers from the Compagnie Générale de Navigation sur le Lac Léman (CGN), which received the Europa Nostra Prize of the European Union for European cultural heritage in 2014 for the exemplary preservation of the Belle Époque steamship fleet. These eight paddle steamers still have a significant impact on passenger shipping on the entire Lake Geneva area.
