Sawaki Kin'ichi

Sawaki Kin'ichi ( Japanese 沢 木 欣 一 ; born October 6, 1919 in Toyama Prefecture , † November 5, 2001 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese poet and essayist.

Sawaki studied at the Imperial University of Tokyo . In 1966 he became a professor at the Tokyo Art School . He was married to the poet Hosomi Ayako .

Sawaki is considered one of the most important Japanese haiku poets of the second half of the 20th century. In 1946 he founded the haiku journal Kaze (wind). From 1987 to 1993 he was President of the Haiku Poets Association. He wrote several haiku volumes, including ends ( 塩田 ; 1956), Okinawa Gin'yūshū ( 沖縄吟遊集 ; 1974), Hakucho ( 白鳥 , 1995, with the Iida-Dakotsu Prize awarded) and Ayako no Te ( 綾子の手 ; 2000). For the volume of essays Shōwa Haiku no Seishun ( 昭和 俳 句 の 青春 ; 1995) he received the 1996 Critics' Prize of the Haiku Poets Association.
