Bow horn

Brass instruments belong to the family of the bow horns , which are related to the horn due to their wide length (horn instruments). In the design of the Belgian wind instrument maker Adolphe Sax , they are also called sax horns :

“Since the end of the 19th century there has been a lot of talk about iron horns ; What is meant is the horn with or without valves in all sizes; this name is an unfortunate transformation of English-French. bugle , which probably belongs together with ahd. buhhil 'horn' [...]. "

The French term for flugelhorn or cornet is still today bugle , while bugle ténor for the tenor horn . The German name bugle but nonsensical, because it means Horn Horn .

The expression is used inconsistently by Winfried Pape: When describing the trumpet, it is said that the "origin of the bow shape in the 15th century" should be assumed. Accordingly, bow is a synonym for the trumpet shape, which can also be found on the flugelhorn and tuba. On the other hand, he describes the flugelhorn as an "instrument of the bow-horn family (bugle = horn)".
