The Scandic Palace is a four-star hotel in the Estonian capital Tallinn . The first building specially designed as a hotel in Tallinn was built in 1937 on the city's central square, today's Freedom Square ( Estonian Vabaduse väljak ).

Hotel and location

The seven-storey hotel is located directly at the old town, 100 steps from the Harju gate ( Estonian Harju värav ; historical Low German name Smedeporte ) of the Tallinn city wall , 300 m from its highest tower Kiek in de Kök , 550 m from the town hall square ( Raekoja plats ), about 1 km from the passenger port and about 4 km from Tallinn Airport .

The hotel has 86 rooms, a restaurant, a bar and conference rooms on the ground floor.

history

The building was built between 1935 and 1937 within just two years, based on a design by the Estonian architect Elmar Lohk . The Palace was officially opened on January 16, 1937. Before the Second World War, it was the most exclusive hotel in the small Baltic state.

After a short period of operation, the hotel was nationalized by the Soviet authorities in 1940 and operated as a typical Soviet hotel. In 1959, a side wing was added on Pärnu maantee street , which resembled the main facade. On one side the hotel merges into the "Russian Theater" (est. Vene Teater ).

The latest story began in the late 1980s when joint ventures were allowed under Gorbachev . One of the first joint venture companies in the USSR was the Finest Hotel Group , under whose direction the Soviet Palace was converted into a posh western hotel. The reopening took place in 1989 by Indrek Toome and Ilkka Suominen .

Prominent overnight guests included the Norwegian royal couple , Mick Jagger ( The Rolling Stones ), the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Alexius II , Alla Pugacheva , Bryan Adams and others.

In February 2013 Scandic Palace was sold to EfTEN SPV 11 OÜ . The renaming will take place in April 2013.
