Scaphirhynchus is a purely North American genus of the shovel sturgeon (Scaphirhynchinae).

features

The Scaphirhynchus species have a spindle-shaped body with a relatively broad front body, which has five rows of bone scales as in the other sturgeon species. The snout is broad and spatulate. They differ from the species of the genus Pseudoscaphirhynchus by the four-lobed lower lip, the fringed barbels and the elongated caudal peduncle, which is completely covered by bone plates.

Systematics

The genus comprises three species and is the sister taxon of the genus Pseudoscaphirhynchus with which it forms the subfamily of the shovel sturgeon ( Scaphirhynchinae) within the family of the sturgeon (Acipenseridae).
