The shovel sturgeon ( Scaphirhynchinae) are a subfamily of the sturgeon (Acipenseridae). It comprises two genera , one in North America and one in Central Asia, with 3 species each . The fish have a flattened rostrum . There is no spiraculum . The Scaphirhynchinen are probably not a phylogenetic unit at all, but rather belong as dwarf forms to the acipenserines of their geographic region (Grande and Bemis 1991).

The Asian species are relatively small for sturgeon with lengths of 27 to 70 centimeters. They are endemic to the Amu-Darja and Syr-Darja rivers , which flow into the Aral Sea . All three species are considered endangered.
