Pseudoscaphirhynchus is a species of sturgeon (Acipenseridae), the three in the tributaries of the Aral Sea occurring species comprises. All three species are threatened with extinction due to the massive destruction and pollution of their habitats, Pseudoscaphirhynchus fedtschenkoi and Pseudoscaphirhynchus hermanni may already have become extinct.

features

Pseudoscaphirhynchus are the smallest sturgeon species living today, with a maximum length of well under one meter. Their body is spindle-shaped with a relatively broad front body and has five rows of bone scales, as in most other sturgeon species. The snout is broad and spatulate. They differ from the species of the genus Scaphirhynchus by the bilobed lower lip, the fringed barbels and the caudal peduncle, which is not completely covered by bone plates.

Systematics

The genus was established in 1900 by the Russian zoologist Alexander Michailowitsch Nikolski and includes three species. It used to be incorporated as the sister taxon of the genus Scaphirhynchus in the subfamily of the shovel sturgeon (Scaphirhynchinae). However, the comparison of nucleotides from mitochondrial DNA revealed a closer relationship between Pseudoscaphirhynchus and the genus Acipenser , so that Pseudoscaphirhynchus was placed in the subfamily Acipenserinae and the subfamily Scaphirhynchinae only consists of the genus Scaphirhynchus .
