Ategorum (English original title: Scattergories ) is a quiz game based on the classic writing game city, country, river . It was first published in 1988 by the American game publisher Milton Bradley and also internationally in the following years. In 1990 CATEGORY was included in the recommendation list Mensa Select of the Association Mensa International .

Background and game material

In its style of play , ategorum corresponds to the classic writing game city, country, river , whereby the other players have to write down terms for given categories with an initial letter chosen for each round. The game material consists of six writing pads, six answer blocks, 18 category cards with 12 categories each, a timer, a letter cube, a roller board and six pencils.

Game flow

To prepare for the game, each player receives a writing pad with a writing pad, a pencil and a category card of each type. The players agree on one of the cards and put it in the writing pad so that the generic terms are recognizable. The clock is wound and the letter die is thrown by one of the players. The players now have to find a term for each category with the first letter thrown and write it down before the clock runs out.

Once the time is up, all players must put the pencil aside. The players read their answers aloud and get one point for each answer that is not repeated. If the answers are identical to those of other players, there is no point. All points are noted on the edge of the column, then the dice are rolled again and the game continues with the new letter.

The game ends after three rounds and the player with the most total points wins the game.
