Scenery ( German scenery ) is the first album by the Japanese jazz pianist Ryo Fukui . It was published in 1976 and recorded by Fukui on piano together with Satoshi Denpo as double bass and Yoshinori Fukui as drum accompaniment.

reception

While the album remained virtually unknown in the US due to the general decline in interest in jazz music in the 1970s, which was also dominated by fusion , it was all the more successful in Japan. The reviews from fans and the trade press there were very positive. In the decades after its release, the album also became internationally known and reached new critics and fans who also rated Fukui's debut work very positively. Fukui was essentially self-taught and took up the classic jazz styles of the 1950s and 1960s ( cool jazz , hardbop , modal jazz ) in his album , in contrast to the dominant jazz trends of the 1970s (rock jazz, fusion, free jazz). This went so far that the Japanese was even compared to jazz greats like McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans .

Until 2011, the original record pressing from 1976 was the only available sound recording of the album. This increased the value significantly. In 2011 the album was re-released on CD in Japan. An independent re-release followed in 2018, also on CD and again as an LP limited to 1,000 copies by the Swiss label We Release Jazz . The original master tapes were used for the re-release and remastered with modern means.

Uploading the album to YouTube played a major role in spreading the album.
