The Schäfflerbrunnen is located in the Schäfflerhof in Augsburg's Lechviertel at Schwibbogengasse 9.

history

The fountain was created for Augsburg's 2000th anniversary in 1985 as a symbol for the craft, especially for the shepherd's trade , at the same time as the Schäfflerhof , a quiet little inner courtyard between residential buildings in the old town. This can be reached from Schwibbogengasse via a narrow passage, which is spanned by a Schwibbogen with the inscription "Schäffler-Hof". In the 18th and 19th centuries there were a total of four sheep farms in this quarter. On the site of the Schäfflerhof was the Käbitz Schäfflerei until it was destroyed in the air raids on Augsburg in 1944. The last Augsburg shepherd, Stephan Demharter, also lived in Schwibbogengasse.

The Schäfflerbrunnen is the work of the Augsburg artist Christian Angerbauer and is based on a small fountain model that was found in the destroyed building in 1944. He puts on the central fountain column known since the 16th century Schäfflertanz , the guild dance Schaeffler,. On the fountain pool the production is shown of a barrel on four large bronze plates.

In the Schäfflerhof there are also information showcases about the farm and the craft.
