Beautiful world, bad people

In the autobiographical work Schöne Welt, böse Leut , Claus Gatterer describes his childhood in Sesto in South Tyrol .

It deals with individual topics in chronological order, but they also overlap. Integrated into the chapters in which he relates the events in the village community, he touches on the historical events of the annexation of South Tyrol , the seizure of power by Mussolini , the changes in the German-speaking area through fascism , the impact of National Socialism and the Second World War . It gives the reader an insightful insight into the social structures of a typical South Tyrolean village community. The author cleverly incorporates his knowledge and clears up all sorts of ideas and fairy tales that still shape parts of South Tyrolean society today. On the one hand, they help to trace transfigured views of living together in South Tyrol back to historical developments, and on the other hand, they help to portray many naturalized ways of life as adequate due to the political changes that have taken place in recent decades. Stylistically, Klaus Gatterer captivates with a slightly ironic description of the events from a historical perspective. He summarizes the linguistic differences precisely, so that he is also linguistically able, thanks to his contemporary, slightly intellectual style of writing, to present the "then" as distant and foreign without having to forego a feeling of connectedness.
