A ladle , also called a ladle or soup ladle , belongs in particular to the serving set and is mainly used to fill up soup or other warm or cold liquids. In addition, it is used in the kitchen as a general kitchen device for pouring, transferring and topping up hot, warm or cold liquids of all kinds and sometimes also for measuring. It is essential for B. in the production of risotto , to continuously add boiling hot liquid during the cooking time of the rice dish.

It is commercially available in various shapes and materials. Basically it consists of a semicircular ladle and a long handle, whereby it is often designed so that the contents of a ladle make one serving. It usually consists of metal , predominantly of stainless steel . But there are also models made of plastic , which are often used as camping dishes. Sometimes it is also equipped with a handle , for which, in addition to metal, plastic or wood is sometimes used.

In northern Germany, the word "grinding" or "soup loop" is also used for the ladle, while the word "scoop" is usually used in southern Germany.

A skimmer (also Kloßkelle ) is shaped like a normal ladle; but has holes that allow the water to run off, for example when skimming the foam or removing the dumplings.
