A slotted spoon or slotted ladle is a kitchen tool that is used to skim off the protein and suspended matter in broths , soups and sauces that forms during the first boiling . It has the shape of a flat soup ladle, the bottom of which is regularly perforated or provided with a wire mesh comparable to a sieve (then it is also called a sieve or wire spoon ).

Apart from the named use, slotted spoons are generally used to remove solid components from a cooking liquid, such as. B. Dumplings, blanched vegetables or fried pastries.

Sieve spoon

The sacred utensils included sieve spoons - also called colatorium - as early as the 6th century and are still used today to remove foreign objects (e.g. cork remains) that have fallen into the sacrament chalice.
