Shabbtai Donnolo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shabbtai Donnolo (* 913 in Oria ; † after 982; Hebrew שבתי דונולו) was an Italian doctor and author of medical works. Most of the information about Donnolo comes from an autobiographical sketch that he wrote in his most famous work, the Sefer Chachmoni ( Hebrew חכמוני; for the name see also 1 Chr 1,11  EU ), placed in front.

In his childhood, Donnolo was kidnapped by the Saracens , but ransomed by relatives from southern Italy. There he stayed and devoted himself to the study of rabbinical literature as well as medical works of antiquity. He worked as a doctor and - in today's words - a pharmacist.

In Jaffa , the Donnolo Hospital, which was closed in 1980, was named after him.
