Shabtai Shavit

Shabtai Shavit ( Hebrew שבתי שביט; * 1939 ) is an Israeli secret service worker. From 1989 to 1996 he was director general of the Israeli secret service Mossad .

Life

Shavit was a member of the Sajeret Matkal special unit of the Israel Defense Forces . He completed his academic training at Harvard University in America .

In 1957 he joined the Mossad. At the same time, he was commander of the South Command of the Israel Defense Forces from 1958 to 1959 . Shavit held various positions within the Mossad before he was appointed director of the secret service in 1989. He was the last Mossad director whose name was not mentioned in public during his tenure. It was only known as the "S". After the murder of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin and various failures, he had to resign. On March 24, 1996, Major General Dani Jatom was appointed as the new General Manager.

In 2001 he became chairman of the Institute for Counter Terrorism at the interdisciplinary center in Hertzlija .
