Nachum Admoni ( Hebrew נחום אדמוני; *  November 21, 1929 in Jerusalem ) was director of the Israeli secret service Mossad from 1982 to 1989 .

Life

Admoni was born into a Polish family. First he attended the Rehavia high school. He was a member of the Shai during the War of Independence in 1948. He was then in the Israel Defense Forces until 1949 .

After the war, Admoni studied at Berkeley University in the USA until 1954 . After returning to Israel, he made a career in the Mossad. Under Yitzchak Chofi as Mossad director, he had been its deputy since 1976.

On September 12, 1982 Admoni succeeded Chofi. Major General Yekutiel Adam was originally intended for the post, but fell in the Lebanon War. During his tenure, the affairs of Mordechai Vanunu , who was kidnapped by the Mossad in Italy on September 30, 1986, and Jonathan Pollard , who was discovered and arrested as an Israeli spy in the United States, fell. The Mossad was also involved in the Iran-Contra affair at this time . When various gross errors during operations by Mossad agents became known in 1989, Admoni resigned from his position.

On August 28, 2006, Ehud Olmert Admoni wanted to appoint the chairman of the later so-called Winograd Commission , which was to investigate the behavior of the Israeli government during the 2006 Lebanon War . On September 17, 2006, however, it was announced that Admoni would not be part of the commission.
