Schachnermühle
The Schachnermühle is a watermill on the Zimitzbach in the forest outside the settlement area of the Schachen district of Gößl in the Grundlsee municipality in the Liezen district of Styria . It was run as a foam mill until 2001 and occasionally started up as a production mill for orders. It was one of the last functioning water mills in Austria. Today it is left to decay.
history
The Schachnermühle was built in 1717 and used by the farmers in the area as a grinding and grist mill . To this day it is owned by the Weissenbachner family, called "Schachner", hence the name of the mill. Mill operations were restricted during the First World War . Only the officially permitted quantities were allowed to be ground. Despite controls, there were opportunities for the local population to have their grain milled. This mill was also the first point of contact for the bakeries located in Ausseerland. During the Second World War , the load of a railway wagon that had remained in Bad Aussee with dry peas was ground into flour in the mill and given out to the population. The watermill was in constant use until 1950 and sporadically or for foam grinding until around 2001. The "Schachner Lois", the owner of the mill, held 'foam grinding' for a long time and passed on his knowledge to mill owners in the area. The mill operation has been completely shut down since around 2001 and the mill has been left to decay.
architecture
The building is largely made of wood. The interior consisted of both a grinder and a grist mill. The mill is accessed from the south; the mill wheel, which was previously operated through an upper course from the Zimitzbach, is in the east of the building.
